Can You Walk Up Franz Josef Glacier?

No: the valley walk ends at a viewpoint well short of the ice. The Department of Conservation's track, car-park fees, hazards, and how a guided heli hike gets you onto the glacier.

Updated November 2026

No. You can walk up the Franz Josef Glacier valley to a viewpoint, but not onto the glacier. The Department of Conservation’s walk is 1.7 km return, about 30 minutes, and it stops where the river has cut off the valley: it is not possible to go further on foot. To stand on the ice you go by helicopter with a guide, which the Department of Conservation calls the only safe way onto the glacier for guided walks. Franz Josef Glacier Guides’ 2.5 Hour Glacier Hike with Helicopter Transfer does that, from US$499 a person (checked November 2026).

The valley walk

Map of the Franz Josef Glacier valley: Franz Josef / Waiau township on State Highway 6, the road south to the glacier car park, 4.8 km by road from the township, Sentinel Rock 630 m on foot from the car park, and the outline of Franz Josef Glacier, Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere, further up the valley
From Franz Josef / Waiau township to the glacier car park is 4.8 km by road; Sentinel Rock is 630 m on foot from the car park. The ice starts well beyond the end of the track.

From the township, cross the Waiho River bridge and turn onto the Glacier Access Road, or take Te Ara a Waiau Walkway/Cycleway beside it. The car park at the end of the road is 4.8 km by road from the township; the road is unsealed but suitable for cars, campervans and buses (Department of Conservation).

The walk itself is 1.7 km return by the same track and takes about 30 minutes. It winds through rainforest, with glimpses of the mountain tops, waterfalls and the upper glacier, then climbs a short way to a view up the valley, with the Waiho River winding towards the coast. That is the end: the river has cut off access up the valley. Sentinel Rock, a separate short walk, is 630 m on foot from the car park.

The Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre posts a daily glacier access update. On Sunday 8 November 2026 it listed the Franz Josef Glacier valley and access road as open, with the viewpoint 3,000 m from the terminal face and 30 minutes’ walk return.

Parking at the glacier car park

The Department of Conservation charges for the car park: NZ$2.50 per half hour or NZ$20 a day. If you arrive and leave within 10 minutes, parking is free; for longer you pay on arrival, by card at the machines, as cash is not accepted (Department of Conservation, checked November 2026). Locals and other car-park users can buy an annual permit online.

The barriers and the hazards

Illustration: walkers in rain jackets on a gravel track at the end of a wide grey river valley, a rope barrier across the path, the glacier and snowy peaks far away at the head of the valley under broken cloud
Illustration. The end of the valley track: a rope barrier, and the glacier still far up the valley.

The valley is a hazardous place. Ice falling into a glacial river can dam it, and when the dam gives way a wave of water and ice runs down the valley; heavy rain loosens rock on the steep walls, and a downpour can flood the track within minutes. Ice collapse and rock fall can happen at any time at the terminal face, so the Department of Conservation asks walkers not to go beyond the rope barrier. In its words, “People have died or been seriously injured after ignoring signs and going over the barriers”.

The track and the access road can close for flooding, rock fall or landslides, so check at the visitor centre at 69 Cron Street before you go. Flying a drone without a permit is prohibited.

Why the ice is reached only by helicopter

The glacier has retreated, and the landscape moves every day. In the Department of Conservation’s words, “Helicopters are the only safe way to get people onto the glacier for guided walks”, which is why you hear them overhead on the valley walk. To see the snowfields of the upper névé at all, you need a flight in a helicopter or a ski plane.

So there are two ways to go further than the viewpoint:

  • On foot on the ice: the heli hike. A flight of about 4 minutes from the township to a landing high on the glacier, then up to 2.5 hours walking in crampons with a guide. From age 10, 35 to 115 kg.
  • On the snow for a few minutes: a scenic flight with a snow landing, from HeliServices.NZ Fox Franz Haast's 20-minute flight at US$200 upwards (checked November 2026). Heli hike or scenic flight lists them all.

The walk is still worth doing either way. It costs only the parking, shows the valley the glacier has left behind, and on a cloudy day when nothing flies it is the closest you will get.
