Is the Franz Josef Heli Hike Worth It?
Who the Franz Josef heli hike is worth its price to, who should take a scenic flight instead, what the low reviews are about, and the costs that are not on the ticket.
The Franz Josef heli hike is worth it if you want to walk on the glacier rather than look at it, and you have two days in Franz Josef to give the weather a chance. Franz Josef Glacier Guides’ 2.5 Hour Glacier Hike with Helicopter Transfer is from US$499 a person (checked November 2026), level with the hour-long scenic flight and the only trip from the township that keeps you on the ice for hours. If you care more about the view, have one day with a poor forecast, or weigh over 115 kg, a scenic flight with a snow landing suits you better, and the shortest ones cost less than half as much.
The calendar shows the options for the date you pick. You can reserve now, pay later and cancel free until 24 hours before.
What the money buys that a flight does not

Time on the ice. A scenic flight such as Glacier Country Helicopters' 35-minute trip stops for 10 minutes at an elevated snow landing site, where you step out, take photographs and climb back in. The heli hike gives you up to 2.5 hours on the glacier itself, in crampons, behind a guide who picks the route through whatever the ice has formed that week.
That is what you pay for. The flight is the short part: about 4 minutes each way between the valley and the ice. If seeing the Southern Alps from the air is the point, a 35 or 45-minute scenic flight shows you far more of them than the heli hike does.
The price also buys a guide and the gear: boots, crampons, poles, waterproofs, a helmet and gloves, and a safety briefing. Food, drinks and transfers are not included.
Who it is worth it to
- People who want to walk on a glacier. Of the trips from Franz Josef on GetYourGuide, only the heli hike’s own extended option keeps you on the ice longer (about 8 hours, up to 5.5 on the ice, from age 14, US$859.46 a person on the dates we read, checked November 2026).
- Anyone with two nights in Franz Josef. Franz Josef Glacier Guides needs a four-hour window of clear weather. A spare day turns a cancellation into a delay.
- Fit walkers from age 10. You need reasonable fitness and agility on uneven ice, and the limits are 35 to 115 kg and at least 137 cm.
Who should fly instead, or skip it
- One day in town and a poor forecast. Book a flight instead: it takes under an hour of your day, and if the cloud closes in you have lost less. Of Glacier Country Helicopters’ flights, the 25-minute one is cancelled most often, because it has one route and one landing site.
- Over 115 kg, pregnant, or with back problems. The heli hike is not open to you. Glacier Country Helicopters’ flights take passengers of 120 kg and over on a Comfort Seat at half the flight price; who can do the heli hike has the details.
- Children under 10. Not on the hike. Glacier Helicopters' Franz Josef and Fox flight takes children aged 4 to 14 in their own seat.
- You want Aoraki/Mount Cook. The hike stays on Franz Josef Glacier. Glacier Country Helicopters' 45-minute flight passes Aoraki/Mount Cook, and INFLITE Mt Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters' 30-minute flight lands on the Tasman Glacier on the far side of the Main Divide.

Heli hike or scenic flight compares every flight from the township.
What the low reviews are about
The heli hike has 408 reviews on GetYourGuide, averaging 4.7. We read the 350 most recent, the newest dated 25 October 2026 and the oldest 14 July 2023. Their average is 4.74, and 19 give three stars or fewer.
Seven of those 19 have text. Five are about the weather: a trip cancelled, cancelled twice, cut short after landing, or, in October 2026, a night stuck on the glacier because of cloud. A January 2026 reviewer was flown up, spent about 15 minutes on the ice before the trip was called off, and was offered a 40 % discount. The other two are about the experience itself: about 75 people on the ice in smaller groups and a loop of perhaps 500 metres (December 2025), and about 1 hour 15 minutes of actual hiking with a long wait for the helicopter back (March 2025).
For most people the lesson is to keep a spare day and to read the weather and cancellations terms before you go.
Costs that are not on the ticket
The main one is time. If the weather is unsettled, the heli hike may cost you an extra night in Franz Josef. Food and drinks are extra, and you make your own way to the Glacier Base at 63 Cron Street. Booked on GetYourGuide, a trip that does not go ahead on its scheduled departure can be refunded in full.
